Pre Takeoff Checklist

Lesson Objective

During this lesson, the student/candidate will learn the procedures for a successful pre-takeoff checklist, including the importance of each item on the checklist.

Regulatory Requirement

  • §61.87(i)(1)
  • Private Pilot Practical Test Standard IV(A)

Content

  • The importance of a Pre-Takeoff Checklist
  • The difference between a "Check" list and "Do" list
  • CB SIFTT CB, club checklist standard
  • AB CCC DD, used by other clubs
  • use of seatbelts and seat harnesses

Completion Standards

The student must be able to perform
  • the CB SIFTT CB checklist without prompting from the instructor
The student must be able to explain
  • the importance of a pre-takeoff checklist
  • each of the items on the checklist, in order

Prerequisite Study

  • 14 CFR §91.107 Use of safety belts, shoulder harnesses, and child restraint systems.
  • Glider Flying Handbook page 6-2

Recommended Study

  • CB SIFTT CB:
    • Controls -- Free and clear, full motion
    • Ballast -- Appropriate amounts and stowed correctly
    • Straps -- Passenger and Pilot strapped in, and know how to get out
    • Instruments -- Altimeter set, radio on, master switch on
    • Flaps -- Flaps in the correct position (even if we don't use them)
    • Trim -- Set to takeoff setting
    • Tail Dolly -- Removed before takeoff
    • Canopy -- Front and rear canopy secured and locked
    • Brakes -- Dive brakes closed and locked after the slack is out
