Notes:
For a while, European gliders were required to sport red noses and wingtips as an anticollision measure. Several gliders in the US have mounted strobes, but the installation is hampered by concerns for excess drag and difficulty of getting custom installations properly done and documented.
The Strobe experiment was reported in Soaring, February 1999, by Dick Johnson. At least one other pilot, B. Helvie, is reported to have installed a strobe on the tail of his 1-36 and reported that he thought it provided an added layer of protection, especially when ridge-running in poor weather.
Power requirements for really bright strobes is a problem for gliders.
